A detailed reproduction of a champlevé enamel plaque by Nicholas of Verdun, depicting the biblical scene of Moses on Mount Sinai.
This fine art print reproduces a panel from the Klosterneuburg Altar, a masterpiece of Mosan art created by Nicholas of Verdun in 1181. The original work consists of forty-five gilded copper plaques decorated with champlevé enamel, which were originally part of a pulpit before being reconfigured into an altarpiece in the fourteenth century.
The scene depicts Moses receiving the tablets of the Law on Mount Sinai. The composition follows the conventions of the period, utilising a clear, hierarchical arrangement. Moses is shown in profile, his posture conveying a sense of reverence as he reaches towards the divine hand emerging from the clouds. The stylised waves of the mountain and the flames are rendered with a rhythmic, linear quality that is characteristic of the artist's approach to narrative illustration.
The colour palette is dominated by deep blues and rich golds, typical of the high-quality enamel work produced in the Meuse valley during the twelfth century. The surrounding frame features Latin inscriptions and decorative geometric motifs, which provide a sense of order and structure to the theological narrative. Nicholas of Verdun was known for his ability to combine classical influences with the aesthetic sensibilities of the Romanesque era, resulting in figures that possess a distinct sense of movement and physical presence.
This print captures the fine details of the metalwork, including the incised lines and the interplay between the reflective gilded surfaces and the opaque enamel. It offers a view into the technical sophistication of medieval craftsmanship, where religious iconography was translated into durable, precious materials. The work remains a primary example of the transition towards the more naturalistic styles that would define later Gothic art.
