An abstract oil painting by Friedel Dzubas, featuring a dense, dark central form set against a luminous golden background.
Friedel Dzubas was a significant figure within the mid-century American art scene, having moved to New York in 1939. His work from the late 1950s often demonstrates a transition from the gestural energy of early Abstract Expressionism toward the expansive, colour-focused approach that defined his later career. Moonhunt is a representative example of this period, where the application of paint suggests both physical movement and atmospheric depth.
The composition is dominated by a heavy, dark central mass that appears to descend from a luminous, golden upper field. Dzubas employs a technique of dragging and layering pigment, which creates a sense of verticality and weight. The dark, earthy tones of the central form contrast with the lighter, almost ethereal background, while small accents of turquoise and green at the base introduce a secondary chromatic tension. This work avoids representational imagery, instead relying on the interaction of colour fields and the physical texture of the paint to engage the viewer.
Dzubas often worked with large canvases, allowing the scale of the work to dictate the viewer's physical response. In Moonhunt, the relationship between the opaque, dense central structure and the surrounding space creates a dynamic equilibrium. The paint application is deliberate, showing the artist's interest in the materiality of oil on canvas. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow through abstract forms, Dzubas invites an interpretation based on visual sensation rather than narrative content. This piece captures a moment of stylistic shift in his practice, balancing the raw energy of his earlier works with a more controlled, meditative use of colour and space.
