A serene woodblock print from 1884 depicting a moonlit bay at Shinagawa, framed by a traditional interior with a decorative lantern.

This woodblock print, titled Moon at Shinagawa, belongs to the series One Hundred Views of Musashi, published in 1884. The work captures a nocturnal scene overlooking the bay, framed by the interior of a structure. A large, pale moon hangs in the night sky, casting a soft reflection across the water where a solitary boat with a white sail glides past the shoreline. The foreground features a red-trimmed lantern decorated with floral motifs, positioned near a bamboo screen and a draped red fabric that draws the eye into the composition. Utagawa Hiroshige III, a student of the famous Hiroshige, adopted the stylistic conventions of the Ukiyo-e tradition while operating during the Meiji period. The print utilises a muted colour palette, dominated by deep blues and greys, which effectively conveys the quiet atmosphere of the evening. The composition relies on the contrast between the architectural elements in the foreground and the expansive, open water in the distance. This framing technique provides a sense of depth, inviting the viewer to look out from the interior space toward the horizon. The inclusion of the lantern adds a domestic touch to the maritime setting, grounding the scene in a specific, lived-in environment. The precise lines of the bamboo and the delicate rendering of the water surface demonstrate the technical skill involved in the woodblock printing process of the late nineteenth century. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the era, where traditional Japanese subjects were rendered with a focus on atmospheric conditions and spatial arrangement. The print remains a representative example of the late Ukiyo-e style, maintaining the balance between decorative detail and observational clarity.
