A modernist interpretation of the famous Provençal mountain by American artist Marsden Hartley. This 1927 oil painting uses bold, rhythmic brushstrokes and a palette of pink and blue with green.
Marsden Hartley painted this view of Mont Sainte-Victoire around 1927 during his stay in Aix-en-Provence. The mountain is a subject famously associated with Paul Cézanne. Hartley moved to the south of France to study the locations where Cézanne worked. This painting reflects his attempt to engage with the French master's methods while maintaining his own modernist style. The composition features the limestone ridge of the mountain rendered in shades of mauve and pale pink. Hartley used thick, rhythmic brushstrokes to define the geological forms. These marks create a sense of weight and volume. The foreground consists of steep slopes in green and yellow with deep blue. The application of paint is deliberate and structured. Each stroke follows the contour of the land or the direction of the light. Unlike the more analytical watercolours of Cézanne, Hartley's oil painting is heavy and tactile. The sky is a pale, desaturated blue with horizontal white strokes representing clouds. The contrast between the sunlit pink peaks and the dark blue shadows in the crevices is sharp. This work belongs to a period when Hartley sought a more disciplined approach to painting. He moved away from his earlier abstract experiments in Berlin and New York. The painting is part of a series of landscapes Hartley produced in the late 1920s. It demonstrates his interest in the physical presence of the natural world. By choosing this specific site, Hartley placed himself within a specific lineage of modern art. He focused on the structural qualities of the mountain rather than its atmospheric effects. The result is a solid, almost architectural representation of the Provençal terrain.
