Description
Monmouthshire looks across a wooded river valley to weathered castle ruins, their towers and broken arches standing above pale cliffs and patterned green hills.
Sunlit stone ruins crown a high outcrop, with a square tower, broken archways and layered defensive masonry catching the light. Below, pale cliffs descend to a winding river, while fields and hedgerows form a patchwork across the distant slopes under broad summer clouds. Heather and low scrub add texture to the lower slopes near the water.
For visitors, Monmouthshire brings together the drama of its borderland history and the calm of the Wye Valley landscape. People with local ties may recognise the pull of its river routes, ancient sites and long views across cultivated countryside.
