Description
A satirical 17th-century Flemish Baroque painting by David Teniers the Younger. This singerie work depicts monkeys imitating human behaviour within a detailed, rustic kitchen setting.
David Teniers the Younger was a leading Flemish artist of the 17th century. He was particularly known for his genre paintings of peasant life and tavern scenes. This work belongs to a specific sub-genre known as singerie. In these compositions, monkeys are shown dressed in human clothes and performing everyday human tasks. This was a common satirical tool used by artists in the Low Countries to mock human vanity and the absurdity of social customs.
The scene takes place in a dark, rustic kitchen. A large group of monkeys occupies the space, divided into smaller clusters. In the centre, several animals huddle around a small fire where food is being prepared. To the left, a monkey wearing a red hat with a white feather sits on a high stool, looking towards the viewer. In the foreground, two monkeys examine fruit on the floor next to a ceramic jug and a glass of wine. On the right, another monkey sits at a draped table with bread and glasses.
Teniers employs a palette dominated by earth tones. The walls and floor are rendered in shades of brown and ochre, which creates a somber atmosphere. Light enters from a window on the far left, casting shadows across the room and defining the forms of the animals. The artist pays close attention to the texture of the fur and the various kitchen implements. Hanging meats and sausages are visible in the upper right corner, adding to the domestic setting.
This painting is currently held in the collection of the State Hermitage Museum. It is a prime example of how Teniers adapted the traditional kitchen scene into a humorous commentary. By replacing humans with monkeys, the artist invites the viewer to laugh at the mimicry of social behaviours. The work remains a significant example of Flemish Baroque genre painting.
