A refined ink painting by Prince-Abbot Ryōshō depicting the monk Kenkō in quiet study, framed by elegant silk embroidery.
This work depicts the celebrated Japanese monk and essayist Yoshida Kenkō, author of the Tsurezuregusa (Essays in Idleness), engaged in quiet study. The composition is minimalist, focusing on the solitary figure of the monk seated beside a small oil lamp. His posture is relaxed, reflecting the contemplative nature of his literary pursuits. The ink lines are spare and precise, capturing the essence of the subject without unnecessary detail.
The central scene is framed by a larger silk mounting decorated with embroidered motifs of a phoenix and paulownia branches. This decorative border provides a contrast to the stark simplicity of the central ink drawing. The inclusion of calligraphy to the left of the monk integrates the visual and literary arts, a common practice in the tradition of Japanese literati painting. The use of negative space is deliberate, directing the viewer's attention to the monk and the scroll he holds.
Prince-Abbot Ryōshō, a member of the imperial family and a high-ranking Buddhist cleric, produced works that often reflect his scholarly interests and refined aesthetic sensibilities. His approach to painting is characterised by a restraint that aligns with the values of Zen-influenced artistic practice. The muted palette, dominated by the natural tones of the silk and the dark ink, creates a sense of calm. This print captures the subtle textures of the original silk mounting and the delicate brushwork of the ink drawing, offering a window into the intellectual life of the Edo period. The work is a study in balance, where the quietude of the monk is echoed in the sparse arrangement of the composition.
