A detailed etching by Samuel Palmer depicting a pastoral scene inspired by Virgil, featuring shepherds and their flock under a low sun.
Samuel Palmer produced this etching, Moeris and Galatea, during the final decade of his life. It draws inspiration from the Eclogues of Virgil, a recurring theme in his later work. The composition depicts a pastoral scene where the shepherd Moeris rests in a shaded, rocky alcove, while his flock grazes near a stream. The sun hangs low in the sky, casting rays across the water and illuminating the coastal cliffs.
Palmer employs a dense network of lines to construct the scene. His technique relies on varied hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the foliage, the rough surfaces of the rocks, and the soft forms of the sheep. The light is handled with precision, creating a contrast between the dark, sheltered foreground and the luminous, expansive horizon. This work reflects his preoccupation with the idealised, classical past, a subject he explored through both painting and printmaking.
The etching demonstrates the technical control Palmer achieved in his later years. He was a student of William Blake, and this influence remains visible in the visionary quality of the light and the rhythmic arrangement of the natural elements. The scene is not a literal representation of a specific location, but rather a constructed environment that evokes a sense of quietude and antiquity. The figures of the shepherds are small, integrated into the environment, which emphasises the scale of the natural world. This print is a fine example of the British etching revival, showing how traditional techniques were used to convey poetic and literary subjects.
