A poignant genre scene by Jacob Maris, depicting a woman resting after a long night of caring for an infant, rendered in the atmospheric style of the Hague School.
Jacob Maris, a central figure of the Hague School, produced this work in 1869. The painting depicts a domestic scene of exhaustion and care. A woman sits in a chair, her head tilted back in sleep, having spent the night watching over an infant in a wicker cradle. The room is dim, illuminated only by a small, flickering candle that casts soft shadows across the interior. A cat stands near the cradle, adding a quiet, observational presence to the composition.
The Hague School is known for its tonal approach to painting, often favouring a palette of greys, browns, and muted earth tones to capture the atmospheric quality of Dutch life. In this piece, Maris employs a restrained use of light to focus the viewer on the figures. The brushwork is deliberate, creating a sense of stillness that permeates the scene. The texture of the canvas, visible through the craquelure, adds to the historical character of the work.
Maris moved away from the highly finished, academic style of his early training to embrace a more painterly technique. This shift allowed him to capture the mood of his subjects with greater immediacy. The scene avoids sentimentality, presenting the reality of motherhood and domestic labour with honesty. The composition is balanced, with the cradle and the sleeping woman forming the primary focus. The dark, atmospheric interior reflects the artist's interest in the interplay between shadow and form. This print captures the subtle gradations of tone and the quiet intimacy of the original oil painting, making it a suitable addition for those who appreciate the understated realism of nineteenth-century Dutch art.
