A striking 1908 Fauvist portrait by Kees van Dongen, capturing the cabaret performer Modjesko with bold, non-naturalistic colours and expressive brushwork.
This portrait by Kees van Dongen depicts the performer Modjesko, a figure associated with the Parisian cabaret scene of the early twentieth century. Executed in 1908, the work displays the characteristic traits of Fauvism, an art movement defined by the use of non-naturalistic colour and expressive, simplified forms. Van Dongen applies paint with a directness that prioritises emotional impact over anatomical precision.
The subject is rendered in a profile view, her skin tones depicted in an intense, artificial yellow. This choice of colour creates a stark contrast against the muted, dusty pink background. The singer wears a white bodice and a pearl necklace, elements that provide a neutral counterpoint to the aggressive application of pigment elsewhere on the canvas. Her hat, featuring a prominent green and white plume, adds a decorative element to the composition, while her facial features are reduced to bold, dark outlines.
Van Dongen was a central figure in the Parisian avant-garde, and his work often focused on the performers, dancers, and socialites of the city. His approach to portraiture was frequently described as provocative, as he sought to capture the artifice of the stage rather than the inner psychology of the sitter. The brushwork is loose and visible, suggesting a rapid execution that maintains the energy of the initial observation. By rejecting traditional modelling and chiaroscuro, the artist forces the viewer to engage with the surface of the painting as a constructed object. This piece remains a clear example of how the Fauves utilised colour as an autonomous element, independent of the descriptive requirements of the subject matter. The work is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
