Description
A detailed 1646 etching by Wenceslaus Hollar depicting the mythological encounter between Ceres and the boy Stellio, based on a composition by Adam Elsheimer.
This etching by Wenceslaus Hollar, dated 1646, depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The narrative follows the goddess Ceres, who, while searching for her daughter Proserpina, stops at the cottage of an old woman named Baubo to quench her thirst. Upon drinking the offered beverage too greedily, Ceres is mocked by a young boy, Stellio, who laughs at her unrefined manner. In her anger, the goddess transforms the boy into a lizard. Hollar demonstrates his technical mastery through the use of varied line weights and cross-hatching to define the nocturnal setting. The composition is split between the illuminated figure of Ceres, who stands in profile holding a bowl, and the shadowed doorway where the old woman and the boy emerge. The artist employs a dramatic chiaroscuro effect, typical of the period, to draw the eye toward the interaction between the divine and the mortal. The background features a dense, dark forest, while the foreground includes specific details such as a discarded wheel and botanical elements, which provide a sense of rustic realism to the mythological subject. The print is based on a painting by Adam Elsheimer, a German artist whose works were highly regarded for their atmospheric quality and small-scale precision. Hollar, a prolific printmaker active in London, was known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of his sources into the medium of etching. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the image provides the classical context for the scene, a common practice in seventeenth-century print culture. This work offers a clear example of the collaborative nature of printmaking during the era, where the skill of the etcher was essential in disseminating the compositions of painters to a wider audience.
