A serene Southern Song Dynasty ink wash painting featuring a lone boat navigating mist-covered mountains, executed with delicate brushwork on silk.
This circular fan painting, attributed to the Southern Song master Xia Gui, exemplifies the 'one-corner' composition style characteristic of the period. The artist employs a deliberate asymmetry, placing the primary visual weight of the craggy, mist-shrouded mountains to the right, while leaving the left side of the composition largely open to suggest vast, atmospheric space. The ink wash technique creates a sense of depth through varying tonal values, where the distant peaks fade into the pale, neutral background, mimicking the effect of moisture-laden air.
In the lower left, a small boat carrying fishermen provides a sense of scale, grounding the ethereal environment in human activity. The brushwork is economical, using sharp, angular strokes to define the rock formations and softer, blurred washes for the foliage and water. This approach reflects the aesthetic preference for suggestion over explicit detail, inviting the viewer to contemplate the quietude of the scene. The silk support has aged to a warm, earthy tone, which complements the monochromatic ink palette. Red collector seals are visible on the left, indicating the work's passage through various private collections over the centuries. This piece is a representative example of the academic painting tradition that flourished under the Southern Song court, where artists sought to capture the essence of nature through a refined, minimalist lens. The composition avoids clutter, focusing instead on the interplay between solid forms and the void, a concept central to the philosophical underpinnings of Chinese ink painting.
