A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, depicting a woman and her dog in a quiet, domestic setting overlooking the water.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicts a woman, identified as a mistress of the fifth Tokugawa Shogun, standing within a domestic interior. She is positioned near a shoji screen, adjusting her hair while a small dog sits attentively at her feet. Through the open architecture, a view of the water with a small boat is visible, providing a sense of spatial depth that contrasts with the flattened, decorative treatment of the interior space.
Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single composition. This work displays the characteristic delicate line work and soft colour palette associated with his output. The figure is rendered with the slender, ethereal proportions typical of his style during the mid-eighteenth century. The composition balances the stillness of the indoor scene with the quiet activity on the water, a common trope in Ukiyo-e prints that juxtaposes private life with the broader world.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Edo period printing process. The subtle application of colour, particularly the muted tones of the kimono and the architectural elements, creates a harmonious visual experience. The inclusion of the dog adds a touch of domestic intimacy, grounding the figure in a specific, recognisable setting. Harunobu's ability to capture a fleeting moment of quiet contemplation remains a defining feature of his work. This print serves as an example of the refined aesthetic that defined the later years of his career, moving away from the more robust figures of earlier Ukiyo-e artists toward a more graceful, stylised representation of the human form.
