Sanford Robinson Gifford was a central figure of the second generation of the Hudson River School. His work is frequently associated with Luminism, a style defined by the careful concealment of brushwork and a focus on the effects of light upon the atmosphere. This painting captures the Catskill Mountains during a transition between day and night, where the cooling air meets the warmth of the setting sun.
The composition is anchored by the dark, silhouetted forms of the mountain range and the dense forest line. These elements provide a stark contrast to the luminous sky above. Gifford uses a palette of deep browns and ochres for the foreground, which gives way to the soft, ethereal blues and oranges of the clouds. The mist, rising from the water, acts as a veil that softens the edges of the mountains, creating a sense of depth and quietude.
