A 1922 portrait by Suzanne Valadon, featuring a seated woman with a cat, rendered with the artist's signature firm outlines and grounded, earthy palette.
Suzanne Valadon, a former artist model who transitioned into a painter of significant technical ability, produced this portrait of Miss Lily Walton in 1922. The work displays her characteristic approach to form, which avoids the soft edges of Impressionism in favour of firm, dark outlines and a deliberate, almost sculptural application of paint. Valadon was largely self-taught, having observed the techniques of the masters she posed for, such as Renoir and Degas, yet she developed a distinct visual language that prioritised psychological presence over idealisation.
In this composition, the subject sits in a wooden armchair, holding a ginger cat. The interior setting is rendered with a flattened perspective, drawing attention to the solid shapes of the furniture and the decorative elements, such as the potted plant and the doll on the chest of drawers. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, including deep browns, ochres, and muted greens, which provide a grounding effect for the figure. Valadon uses a heavy, deliberate line to define the contours of the sitter, the chair, and the surrounding objects, creating a sense of structural unity within the frame. The gaze of the sitter is direct and unadorned, reflecting Valadon's interest in capturing the reality of her subjects rather than a romanticised version of their appearance. The painting is a clear example of her mature style, where the influence of her early career as a model informs her empathetic yet objective portrayal of human subjects in their domestic environments.
