Description
A classic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting travellers attempting to encircle a massive tree with Mount Fuji rising in the distance.
Mishima Pass in Kai Province belongs to the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a collection produced by Katsushika Hokusai during the peak of his career. This print captures a moment of human scale against the immense presence of the mountain. The composition is dominated by a massive, ancient tree trunk that occupies the centre of the frame, forcing the viewer to look past its textured bark to the distant, snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji.
At the base of the tree, several travellers are depicted. Three figures attempt to encircle the trunk with their arms, a gesture that communicates the sheer size of the tree. Other figures carry bundles or rest along the path, providing a sense of daily life in the mountainous region of Kai Province. The use of Prussian blue, a pigment that was relatively new to Japan at the time, defines the mountain and the sky, creating a clear contrast with the lighter, earthy tones of the foreground.
Hokusai employs a clear, graphic style. The clouds are rendered with distinct, rounded outlines, a characteristic feature of his work in this series.
