Description
A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting travellers on the historic Tokaido road at the Mishima station.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a scene from the Mishima station, the eleventh stop on the Tokaido road. The Tokaido was the primary route connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto during the Edo period. Hokusai produced this series early in his career, focusing on the daily activities of travellers and the specific geography of the route.
The composition features a group of figures navigating a path near a stone wall and a torii gate. Hokusai employs a clear, graphic style, using defined outlines and a controlled palette to separate the figures from the background elements. The inclusion of the torii gate provides a sense of place, grounding the scene in the religious and cultural geography of Japan. The figures, including a samurai and porters carrying goods, represent the diverse social classes that traversed the Tokaido.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the ukiyo-e tradition. The flat application of colour and the stylised rendering of the stone wall and pine trees reflect the aesthetic priorities of the period.
