A six-panel screen by Nagasawa Rosetsu featuring a sophisticated blend of expressive calligraphy and atmospheric ink-wash scenes.
Nagasawa Rosetsu, a student of Maruyama Okyo, occupies a distinct position within the Maruyama-Shijo school. This six-panel screen composition demonstrates his mastery of ink wash techniques, balancing rigorous calligraphic passages with atmospheric pictorial elements. The work alternates between columns of fluid, expressive kanji and evocative scenes of nature and human figures.
In the second panel, the artist depicts peonies with soft, layered ink tones, suggesting volume through subtle gradations rather than hard outlines. The fourth panel features a solitary figure beneath a crescent moon, framed by bamboo stalks. This scene relies on negative space to convey a sense of quietude. The final panel shows a scholar resting in a mountainous setting, a common motif in East Asian ink painting that Rosetsu interprets with his characteristic economy of line.
Throughout the screen, the calligraphic sections provide a rhythmic counterpoint to the imagery. The brushwork is varied, shifting from thick, bold strokes in the text to delicate, precise marks in the botanical and figurative details. The composition as a whole reflects the artist's interest in the interplay between text and image, a tradition deeply embedded in Japanese art history. By integrating these elements, Rosetsu creates a unified visual experience that invites close observation of both the literary content and the painterly execution. The use of gold leaf borders further defines the structure of the panels, providing a luminous frame for the monochrome ink work. This piece remains a representative example of the artist's ability to blend traditional subject matter with a personal, often unconventional, stylistic approach.
