This woodblock print is the fiftieth station in the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, published by Hoeido. Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the town of Minakuchi, situated in present-day Shiga Prefecture. The composition focuses on the local industry of preparing kanpyo, or dried gourd shavings, which were a well-known regional product.

In the foreground, figures are occupied with the process of hanging long, pale strips of gourd over wooden frames to dry in the sun. The scene captures a quiet, rural moment of daily life along the Tokaido road. A traveller with a conical hat walks past the drying racks, providing a sense of scale and movement. The background features thatched-roof houses and distant, soft-toned mountains, typical of Hiroshige's atmospheric approach to the Japanese countryside.

The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, greens, and the natural tones of the straw and gourd. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance human activity with the surrounding environment. Hiroshige avoids excessive detail, preferring to suggest the texture of the landscape through clean lines and flat areas of colour. This series established his reputation as a master of the genre, as it moved away from the focus on actors and courtesans common in earlier Ukiyo-e works. Instead, it prioritised the experience of travel and the specific characteristics of various Japanese locales.
