A majolica fireplace surround by Mikhail Vrubel, depicting the Russian epic heroes Mikula Selianinovich and Volha in a decorative, symbolic style.
This work is a majolica fireplace surround created by Mikhail Vrubel in 1899. It depicts a scene from the Russian epic poem, the Bylina of Volha and Mikula. The composition is divided into two primary sections flanking a central hearth, unified by a decorative archway. On the left, the ploughman Mikula Selianinovich stands with his horse, while the right side features the prince Volha Svyatoslavich. The upper section is adorned with stylized avian figures, reflecting the artist's interest in folk mythology and medieval Russian aesthetics.
Vrubel was a central figure in the Russian Symbolist movement. His approach to this fireplace design demonstrates a departure from traditional academic painting, favouring a synthesis of craft and fine art. The use of majolica, a tin-glazed earthenware, allows for a specific quality of light reflection and surface texture. The colour palette is composed of deep greens, ochres, and muted blues, which are characteristic of the Abramtsevo ceramic workshop where Vrubel produced several such works. The figures are rendered with a sense of monumental scale, their forms adapted to the architectural constraints of the fireplace structure. The lines are fluid, echoing the decorative tendencies of the period while maintaining a distinct narrative focus on the legendary characters. This piece represents the intersection of industrial design and artistic expression, common in the late nineteenth-century revival of traditional crafts. The work remains a primary example of how Vrubel integrated his painterly vision into functional domestic objects, transforming a standard household feature into a narrative display.
