A Dutch etching from the early eighteenth century depicting a miner at rest, accompanied by moralising verse.
This etching, titled Mijnwerker (The Miner), originates from the Dutch tradition of moralising genre prints. Cornelis van der Sys depicts a solitary figure resting near the entrance of a mine, surrounded by the tools of his trade. The composition balances the physical labour of the worker with the rugged, cavernous environment behind him. The artist employs fine, hatched lines to create texture in the rock faces and the worker's clothing, providing a sense of depth and atmosphere typical of early eighteenth-century printmaking.
The print is accompanied by Dutch text, which frames the miner's toil within a broader philosophical context. The verses reflect on the hidden value of the earth and the human effort required to extract its treasures. This combination of image and text was common in contemporary publications, where visual art served to illustrate moral or social observations. The miner, seated with his pickaxe and cart, is presented not merely as a labourer, but as a subject for contemplation regarding the nature of industry and the pursuit of wealth.
Van der Sys captures the quiet moment of respite in a harsh working environment. The contrast between the light illuminating the miner and the dark, shadowed recesses of the mine entrance draws the viewer's eye to the central figure. The print remains a clear example of the period's interest in documenting various trades and professions, often imbuing these depictions with didactic meaning. The work is presented here as a high-quality fine art print, preserving the delicate line work and the historical character of the original etching.
