The composition is based on a design by Maerten de Vos, a prolific Flemish painter whose work was frequently translated into print by the Sadeler family.

The scene is constructed with the theatricality typical of Northern Mannerism. In the foreground, soldiers gather in a courtyard, their postures and armour rendered with precise, rhythmic hatching. The figures display the elongated proportions and muscular definition favoured by artists of the period. Through the open window in the background, one observes the ruse: Michal has placed an effigy in the bed to deceive the guards, allowing David to escape.

Sadeler, who spent much of his career in Prague under the patronage of Emperor Rudolf II, demonstrates a high level of technical proficiency in this work. The engraving captures the tension of the narrative through the contrast between the alert, armed men in the foreground and the quiet, deceptive scene occurring in the upper chamber. The architectural setting provides a structured frame for the drama, utilising linear perspective to guide the eye from the soldiers to the window above.

This print reflects the collaborative nature of the printmaking industry in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, where the roles of designer and engraver were distinct. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the image provides the scriptural context, a common feature in devotional and narrative prints of the era.
