A detailed eighteenth-century etching depicting a Dutch mason at work, complete with original moralising text and period architectural details.
This etching, titled Metselaar (The Mason), originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf, a collection of prints documenting various trades and professions in the Netherlands during the eighteenth century. The work depicts two figures engaged in masonry: one labourer carries a hod of bricks upon his shoulder, while the other kneels to lay bricks for a wall. The setting includes a canal-side environment with traditional Dutch gabled architecture visible in the background, providing a clear sense of place and period.
The composition is typical of the era, combining a central genre scene with didactic text. Above the image, the title and a brief proverb appear, while a moralising poem is printed below. This structure reflects the period's interest in linking daily labour to broader philosophical or religious themes. The artist employs fine, precise lines to define the textures of the brickwork, the clothing of the labourers, and the distant urban environment. The shading is achieved through careful cross-hatching, which creates a sense of volume and depth within the small frame.
As a historical document, the print offers insight into the tools and methods of construction used in the Dutch Republic. The inclusion of the mortar bucket and the specific posture of the mason provide a realistic record of the trade. The accompanying text serves to elevate the mundane act of building a wall into a metaphor for the human condition, comparing the physical protection of a wall to the spiritual or moral defences required in life. This piece is a representative example of the pedagogical and moralising print culture that flourished in the Netherlands, where visual art was frequently used to instruct the public on both practical skills and ethical conduct.
