A 1521 woodcut by Urs Graf the Elder depicting two mercenaries and a woman beneath a tree where Death waits with an hourglass.
This woodcut by Urs Graf the Elder, dated 1521, captures the grim aesthetic and moral concerns of the early sixteenth-century Swiss Renaissance. Graf, a goldsmith and mercenary soldier himself, possessed an intimate knowledge of the military life he depicted. The composition features two heavily armed mercenaries standing in the foreground, their attire reflecting the flamboyant fashion of the Landsknecht. Beside them, a woman sits on the ground, while a skeletal figure of Death occupies the branches of a gnarled tree above. Death holds an hourglass, a traditional memento mori symbol, reminding the viewer of the transient nature of human existence.
The background reveals a fortified town near a body of water, providing a sense of place that contrasts with the allegorical scene in the foreground. Graf employs a vigorous, linear style, using dense hatching to create volume and texture in the clothing and the rugged bark of the tree. The artist's signature monogram is carved directly into the trunk of the tree, positioned just below the figure of Death. This work reflects the social instability of the period, where the life of a mercenary was often short and fraught with danger. The juxtaposition of the soldiers, the woman, and the personification of mortality creates a narrative of inevitable decay. Graf's work is notable for its raw energy and lack of idealisation, offering a direct view into the anxieties of his time. The print serves as a stark observation of the human condition, stripped of artifice and presented with a sharp, graphic clarity that remains characteristic of his output.
