Description
Enjoy the softer side of the far north at Melvich, where white hillside homes overlook a broad river bend and pale sandbanks beneath rounded green and heather coloured hills.
Stone walls climb the fields behind the water, dividing long sloping enclosures. A row of cottages includes warm red roofs among grey ones, with a dark woodland belt farther up the valley. Low shrubs fringe the near grassy bank, and the channel forms a broad blue curve around the exposed sand.
Melvich is seen across the River Halladale, giving the small homes a setting that extends well beyond the village. The wide lower ground makes the surrounding hills feel gentler than the exposed coast nearby. It offers a local reminder for someone whose northern journeys include the inland river approaches as well as the more dramatic shore.
