A serene pastoral scene by Jacob van Strij, depicting a milkmaid and cattle in a sun-drenched Dutch meadow.
Jacob van Strij, a painter from Dordrecht, produced this work during a period when Dutch artists looked back to the seventeenth-century masters for inspiration. The composition reflects the influence of Aelbert Cuyp, whose pastoral scenes of cattle and rural life defined the aesthetic of the region. Van Strij adopts a similar approach to light and atmosphere, using a soft, golden glow to unify the figures and the surrounding fields.
The scene depicts a quiet moment of agricultural labour. A milkmaid kneels beside a cow, while another figure stands nearby, observing the process. The presence of milk pails and jugs in the foreground provides a sense of daily routine. The cattle, rendered with anatomical precision, occupy the centre of the frame, their forms balanced against the verticality of the trees and the stone gate structure on the left. The background opens into a flat, expansive horizon, typical of the Dutch countryside, where the sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas.
Technically, the painting demonstrates the artist's ability to manage light and shadow to create depth. The transition from the shaded foreground to the sunlit meadow is handled with a subtle gradation of tone. The foliage is painted with a focus on texture, contrasting with the smooth, reflective surfaces of the ceramic vessels. Van Strij avoids excessive ornamentation, preferring a clear, legible arrangement that directs the viewer's eye across the scene. This work captures the idealised view of rural life that was popular among collectors in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, offering a calm, orderly representation of the Dutch agrarian tradition.
