A poignant graphite sketch by Aat Breur-Hibma, documenting a young girl outside the prison at Ravensbrück concentration camp during the Second World War.
This drawing by Aat Breur-Hibma captures a moment of quiet endurance within the Ravensbrück concentration camp. The artist, a Dutch resistance member who was imprisoned in the camp, produced a series of sketches documenting the conditions and the people she encountered. Her work provides a direct, unvarnished account of life under extreme duress.
The subject is a young girl standing outside the camp prison, known as the Bunker. The figure is rendered with economical, sensitive lines that convey both physical exhaustion and a sense of isolation. Her posture, with hands tucked into pockets and shoulders hunched, suggests a defensive reaction to the cold and the environment. The artist uses the texture of the paper to suggest the bleak, austere surroundings of the camp. There is no attempt to romanticise the scene; instead, the focus remains on the human presence within a dehumanising system.
Breur-Hibma managed to preserve these drawings during her imprisonment, often hiding them at great personal risk. They function as a visual diary of the period, documenting the daily reality of the prisoners. The simplicity of the graphite medium allows the viewer to focus on the subject's expression and the starkness of the setting. This work is a record of observation, created by an artist who was herself a participant in the events she depicted. It remains a significant piece of historical documentation, offering a perspective on the experiences of women in Ravensbrück through the eyes of a fellow prisoner.
