A winter scene by Boris Kustodiev, depicting a chance meeting outside a bakery in a provincial Russian town.
Boris Kustodiev, a painter associated with the World of Art group, produced this work in 1917. The composition captures a winter scene in a provincial Russian town, a recurring subject in his oeuvre. A man and a woman meet near a bakery shopfront, which is decorated with a painted sign displaying various pastries and breads. The shop sign, rendered with a degree of stylisation, contrasts with the figures who are dressed in heavy winter furs, typical of the period and climate.
Kustodiev employs a palette that balances the cool tones of the snow with the warmer hues of the sunset and the golden pretzel sign hanging above the entrance. The background features a church dome, a common element in his depictions of Russian life, which provides a sense of place and cultural context. The figures are positioned to suggest a brief, casual encounter, with the man leaning out from the shop doorway while the woman turns towards him.
This watercolour demonstrates the artist's interest in the intersection of folk tradition and modern life. The decorative elements, such as the shop sign and the architectural details, are treated with a focus on pattern and colour. Kustodiev often looked back to the pre-revolutionary provincial life of Russia, creating images that feel both nostalgic and observational. The work is characteristic of his later period, where he moved away from strict realism towards a more personal, illustrative style. The handling of the medium allows for a soft, atmospheric quality, particularly in the rendering of the snowy ground and the fading light of the sky. This print offers a view into the specific aesthetic of Kustodiev, who sought to preserve the visual character of a vanishing world through his art.
