Description
A woodcut by Albrecht Altdorfer, 'Meeting of Joachim and Anna at the Golden Gate' depicts a biblical scene with fine lines and careful detail, characteristic of the Danube School.
This woodcut by Albrecht Altdorfer (c. 1480-1538) depicts the biblical scene of the Meeting of Joachim and Anna at the Golden Gate. Altdorfer, a German painter, engraver, and architect of the Renaissance, is particularly known for his contributions to landscape art and his role as a leader of the Danube School. This movement, active in the early 16th century, emphasised expressive colour and the observation of nature. The woodcut presents a scene of reunion and embrace between Joachim and Anna, parents of the Virgin Mary, set against an architectural backdrop. The composition is defined by fine, closely-spaced lines that create a sense of depth and texture. The figures are rendered with careful attention to detail, and the surrounding architecture is depicted with precision. The use of light and shadow enhances the emotional impact of the scene, drawing the viewer's eye to the central figures and their tender embrace. The overall effect is one of quiet reverence and emotional intensity, typical of Altdorfer's style.

Artist Biography
Albrecht Altdorfer
He was born around 1480, probably in Regensburg, and became a citizen in 1505. He is credited with painting one of the first pure landscapes in oil with no human figures, Landscape with Footbridge (c. 1518 to 1520), a step that no European painter had taken since antiquity. He died in Regensburg in 1538.
