A fine art print of Domenico Ghirlandaio's fresco from the Sassetti Chapel, depicting the legendary meeting between Augustus and the Tiburtine Sibyl.
This fresco, located within the Sassetti Chapel of the Basilica of Santa Trinita in Florence, depicts the legendary encounter between the Roman Emperor Augustus and the Tiburtine Sibyl. According to medieval tradition, the Sibyl revealed a vision of the Virgin and Child to the Emperor, who subsequently refused to be worshipped as a god. Domenico Ghirlandaio, a master of the Florentine school, organises the composition within the constraints of the chapel's architectural arch. The figures are arranged in a balanced, theatrical manner, with Augustus standing on the left, his gaze directed upward toward the celestial vision, while the Sibyl gestures toward the heavens on the right.
The work demonstrates Ghirlandaio's technical proficiency in fresco painting, particularly in his handling of drapery and the subtle modelling of human forms. The background features a panoramic view of a city, rendered with the atmospheric perspective common to the period. Above the figures, a radiant sun containing the IHS monogram occupies the apex of the arch, serving as a visual representation of the divine revelation. The lower portion of the composition includes a decorative heraldic shield encircled by a garland of fruit and leaves, a motif frequently employed by the artist to integrate his narrative scenes with the physical architecture of the chapel.
Ghirlandaio was known for his ability to blend classical themes with contemporary Florentine sensibilities. His work provides a clear view of the aesthetic priorities of the late fifteenth century, where clarity of form and narrative legibility were paramount. This print captures the muted, earthy palette characteristic of the original fresco, allowing for a detailed examination of the artist's brushwork and the structural composition of the scene. It remains a representative example of the decorative programmes commissioned by wealthy merchant families in Renaissance Italy.
