A detailed 1529 engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever depicting the mythological encounter between Jason and Medea.
This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, dated 1529, depicts a scene from the myth of Jason and Medea. As a member of the group known as the Little Masters, Aldegrever was known for his technical precision and small-scale works that demonstrate a mastery of the burin. The composition features Jason, standing in full armour, receiving a small statue of an armed figure from Medea, who is seated before him. The inscription at the top, YASON ET MEDEA, identifies the figures clearly within the context of the classical narrative.
Aldegrever employs a dense system of cross-hatching to define the forms and textures of the scene. The metallic sheen of Jason's armour, the soft folds of Medea's drapery, and the architectural elements in the background are rendered with meticulous attention to detail. The artist balances the figures within a confined space, using the verticality of the standing Jason and the seated posture of Medea to create a sense of interaction. The inclusion of the date and the artist's monogram in the lower left corner is characteristic of his practice, reflecting the professional standards of printmaking in the sixteenth century.
This work provides insight into the reception of classical mythology in Northern Europe during the Renaissance. Aldegrever adapts the subject matter to the aesthetic sensibilities of his time, focusing on the decorative potential of the armour and the expressive gestures of the protagonists. The print is an example of the technical capability of German engravers of the period, who produced works for collectors and connoisseurs. The composition remains focused on the exchange between the two figures, capturing a moment of narrative tension through precise line work and careful shading.
