Richard Gerstl was an Austrian painter known for his expressionistic portraits and landscapes. He was associated with the early Vienna Secession movement but developed a more individualistic style. His career was tragically cut short by suicide at the age of 25. This painting depicts a meadow scene with houses visible in the distance. A tree dominates the right side of the composition, its trunk rendered in thick, textured brushstrokes of purple and brown. The foliage is a mix of greens and blues, applied in a loose, impressionistic manner. The meadow is painted in shades of green and yellow, with touches of blue suggesting wildflowers. The houses in the background are simplified forms, barely discernible through the foliage. The overall effect is one of spontaneity and immediacy, capturing a fleeting moment in nature.
