A classic Victorian colour print by George Baxter, depicting a young boy warming his hands by a fire, produced using his patented multi-block oil printing process.
George Baxter was a pioneer of colour printing in the nineteenth century, developing a complex process that utilised multiple woodblocks to create detailed, multi-toned images. This print, titled Me Warm Now, demonstrates his technical precision and the aesthetic qualities of his patented method. The image depicts a young boy seated on a wooden barrel, warming his hands by a fire. The composition focuses on the warmth of the hearth, using a palette of earthy browns, deep greens, and soft ochres to convey the interior setting.
Baxter prints were highly popular during the mid-Victorian period, offering the public an affordable way to own reproductions of fine art. The process involved an initial steel plate impression, followed by the application of various oil-based colours from woodblocks. This layering technique allowed for a depth of tone that was difficult to achieve with earlier printing methods. The subject matter reflects the Victorian interest in genre scenes, which often depicted everyday life with a focus on sentiment and domesticity.
In this specific work, the artist captures a quiet moment of comfort. The boy is positioned centrally, his posture relaxed as he faces the heat of the fire. The surrounding environment is rendered with a focus on texture, from the rough brickwork of the fireplace to the grain of the wooden barrel. The print includes the characteristic embossed seal of the Baxter process at the base, which served as a mark of authenticity for his patented technique. This piece provides a clear example of the commercial and artistic output of Baxter's London studio, showing the level of detail he maintained in his mass-produced works. It remains a representative example of the mid-nineteenth-century print market in Britain.
