Albert Gleizes, a central figure in the development of Cubism, produced this work during his later period, when his focus shifted towards spiritual and religious themes. The composition reinterprets the traditional Christian iconography of Christ in Majesty, surrounded by the symbols of the four Evangelists: the man, the lion, the ox, and the eagle.

In this piece, Gleizes employs a rhythmic, geometric language to convey the divine. The central figure of Christ is constructed through simplified, angular lines that suggest rather than depict form. Concentric circles radiate from the centre, creating a sense of cosmic order and movement. The palette remains grounded in earthy ochres and browns, punctuated by deliberate strokes of blue, green, and red. These colours define the spatial relationships within the flat, decorative surface of the work.

Unlike his earlier, more analytical Cubist works, this composition demonstrates a move towards a synthesis of form and spiritual content. The Tétramorphe figures are integrated into the corners of the square frame, their forms abstracted into calligraphic shapes that echo the central motif. The work reflects Gleizes's interest in medieval art, particularly Romanesque sculpture and stained glass, which he admired for their structural clarity and symbolic power. By applying the principles of Cubist fragmentation to a traditional religious subject, Gleizes creates a visual meditation on the relationship between material reality and spiritual light.
