This work by Jean-Robert Ango is a study after Nicolas Poussin, specifically referencing the composition found in the Palazzo Giustiniani. Ango, a French artist active in Rome during the mid-eighteenth century, frequently produced drawings that documented the masterworks housed in private Italian collections. His practice involved capturing the essence of earlier compositions through a disciplined use of chalk.
The drawing depicts the biblical narrative of the Massacre of the Innocents. A central soldier dominates the frame, his posture conveying aggressive movement as he engages with a struggling figure.
