An atmospheric etching by Edgar Degas depicting his friend and fellow artist Mary Cassatt visiting the Louvre gallery in Paris.
This print captures the American artist Mary Cassatt during one of her frequent visits to the Louvre in Paris. Edgar Degas, a close friend and colleague, depicts her from behind as she navigates the museum galleries. She holds an open guidebook in one hand and an umbrella in the other, her posture suggesting a moment of quiet observation amidst the vast collection of the institution.
Degas utilised a combination of etching, aquatint, and drypoint to achieve the atmospheric quality of the scene. The composition is notably vertical and narrow, which creates a sense of intimacy and focus. The figure of Cassatt is rendered with dark, dense lines that contrast against the lighter, more loosely etched background of the gallery walls and framed artworks. The floorboards are indicated with sharp, diagonal strokes, providing a sense of perspective that draws the eye toward the figure.
This work belongs to a period when Degas experimented with printmaking techniques to explore themes of modern life and urban observation. By placing Cassatt in the context of the museum, he comments on the role of the artist as a spectator. The print avoids conventional portraiture, opting instead for a candid, almost fleeting glimpse of his subject. The technical execution reflects his interest in the interplay of light and shadow, particularly in how the dark silhouette of the dress interacts with the ambient light of the gallery space. The result is a study of form and movement that captures the essence of a museum visit in the late nineteenth century.
