Agnolo Bronzino
A complex Mannerist fresco by Agnolo Bronzino, depicting the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence with sculptural figures and classical architecture.
Agnolo Bronzino, a central figure of the Florentine Mannerist school, completed this large-scale fresco for the church of San Lorenzo in Florence. The composition depicts the final moments of Saint Lawrence, who is shown lying upon a gridiron. The scene is crowded with figures, demonstrating the artist's focus on anatomical precision and complex, contorted poses characteristic of the period. Bronzino employs a cool, polished colour palette that gives the figures a sculptural, marble-like quality. The architectural setting is highly ordered, featuring classical columns and a central rotunda that provide a rigid structure to the chaotic action occurring in the foreground. The Emperor Decius sits to the right, gesturing towards the saint, while various attendants and soldiers surround the central event. The inclusion of putti descending from above adds a layer of divine intervention to the earthly suffering below. This work reflects the intellectualised approach to painting favoured by the Medici court. Bronzino avoids the naturalistic warmth of the High Renaissance, opting instead for a calculated, artificial grace. The figures are arranged in a dense, frieze-like manner, filling the pictorial space with muscular forms and dramatic tension. The lighting is even and clear, allowing for the meticulous rendering of skin tones and drapery. As a late work, it demonstrates the artist's mastery of complex narrative composition and his ability to maintain a high level of finish across a vast surface area. The painting remains a primary example of the stylistic shift toward the elongated proportions and sophisticated artifice that defined the later sixteenth century in Italy.
