A detailed Baroque engraving depicting the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, featuring dramatic figures and classical architectural framing.
This engraving depicts the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, a subject frequently explored in seventeenth-century Italian art. Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi, a prominent Roman publisher and printmaker, produced this work during the height of the Baroque period. The composition follows the traditional iconography of the saint, who is shown bound and positioned upon a gridiron. His gaze is directed upward toward two putti descending from the clouds, who offer him the palm of martyrdom and a crown of victory.
The scene is framed by classical architectural elements, including columns and an archway, which provide a sense of spatial depth. The figures are rendered with the dramatic tension characteristic of the era. The executioners are depicted with muscular forms and dynamic postures, contrasting with the serene expression of the saint. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of volume and texture, particularly in the detailed folds of the saint's vestments and the atmospheric rendering of the background landscape.
De' Rossi operated a prolific printing house in Rome, known for disseminating works by contemporary masters and reproducing classical compositions. This print reflects the technical precision of the period, where the engraver sought to translate the tonal qualities of painting into the medium of copperplate printing. The balance between the foreground action and the distant, hazy landscape demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of perspective. The work remains a clear example of the printmaking traditions that defined the Roman art market in the late seventeenth century, providing a window into the religious and aesthetic priorities of the time.
