Paul Signac's 'Marseille, an Old Port' captures the shimmering light and atmosphere of the Mediterranean harbour using the pointillist technique. This Neo-Impressionist painting features sailing ships and colourful buildings rendered in small dots of colour.
Paul Signac, a leading figure in Neo-Impressionism, painted 'Marseille, an Old Port' using the pointillist technique he developed with Georges Seurat. Born in Paris, Signac explored coastal scenes throughout his career, capturing the effects of light and atmosphere on water and architecture. He was drawn to the Mediterranean ports, including Marseille, for their bustling activity and colourful settings. This painting presents a hazy view of the old port, rendered with small, distinct dots of colour that blend optically when viewed from a distance. The composition features sailing ships with tall masts along the left side, balanced by buildings and structures on the right. The water in the foreground reflects the colours of the sky and the surrounding port, creating a sense of unity and harmony. The overall effect is one of shimmering light and atmospheric perspective, characteristic of Signac's Neo-Impressionist style.
