A satirical engraving from William Hogarth's Marriage A-la-Mode series, depicting the young Earl Squanderfield visiting a quack doctor's office.
This engraving is the third scene in William Hogarth's six-part series, Marriage A-la-Mode. The narrative follows the disastrous union between the son of a bankrupt Earl and the daughter of a wealthy merchant. In this specific plate, the young Earl Squanderfield visits a quack doctor in London, accompanied by a young woman who appears to be his mistress. The scene is filled with Hogarth's characteristic attention to detail, as the doctor's office is cluttered with bizarre medical curiosities, including a mummified crocodile, a human skull, and various anatomical specimens. These objects serve to mock the dubious nature of the physician's practice.
The Earl, holding a cane, gestures towards the doctor, while the young woman stands nearby, seemingly suffering from a medical condition. The composition is dense, with every corner of the room packed with items that suggest charlatanism and moral decay. Hogarth uses this setting to critique the vanity and corruption of the upper classes during the eighteenth century. The print demonstrates the artist's mastery of line and his ability to weave complex social commentary into a single frame. The figures are rendered with expressive faces and period-accurate clothing, capturing the theatricality of the era. By presenting this scene as a visual drama, Hogarth invites the viewer to examine the consequences of the Earl's reckless lifestyle. The work remains a primary example of British satirical art, reflecting the artist's keen observation of human folly and the social structures of his time.
