A detailed watercolour and ink study of the market square in Greifswald, capturing the architectural character and daily life of the artist's birthplace.
This work depicts the market square of Greifswald, the artist's birthplace in Pomerania. Executed in watercolour and ink, the composition captures the architectural character of the town with precision. The buildings, including the town hall and surrounding merchant houses, display the gabled forms typical of North German brick Gothic architecture. Friedrich employs a light, controlled palette, allowing the pale stone and terracotta roof tiles to define the spatial arrangement of the square.
In the foreground, figures in contemporary early nineteenth-century attire populate the space. These individuals, ranging from men in top hats to a horse-drawn carriage, provide a sense of scale and daily activity. Unlike the more atmospheric and symbolic works for which Friedrich is known, this piece functions as a topographical record. It demonstrates his ability to observe and document the physical environment with clarity. The perspective draws the eye towards the centre of the square, where the lines of the buildings converge, creating a structured view of urban life.
The absence of dramatic weather or heavy shadows, common in his later oil paintings, allows the viewer to focus on the structural details of the town. The trees lining the right side of the square introduce a natural element that softens the rigid geometry of the architecture. This print preserves the delicate washes and fine ink lines of the original, offering a view into the artist's observational practice. It is a study of a specific place at a specific time, rendered with the technical discipline characteristic of his graphic work.
