A 1935 coastal study by Kimon Loghi, featuring a secluded cove rendered with expressive, painterly brushwork and a balanced palette of earth tones and cool sea blues.
Kimon Loghi, a Romanian painter of Greek descent, produced this coastal study in 1935. The work captures a secluded cove, framed by rugged, dark-toned rock formations that contrast with the lighter, cooler hues of the sea and sky. Loghi employs a direct, painterly approach, using visible brushstrokes to convey the movement of the water and the texture of the stone. The composition is anchored by a central rocky outcrop, which draws the eye across the small inlet. The palette is dominated by earthy browns and ochres in the foreground, shifting into soft teals, blues, and greys as the gaze moves toward the horizon. The sky is rendered with broad, sweeping strokes, suggesting a breezy day at the coast. There is a sense of immediacy in the application of paint, characteristic of plein air traditions where the artist seeks to record the fleeting qualities of light and atmosphere. Loghi studied in Munich, and his work often reflects the influence of European academic training tempered by a more fluid, expressive handling of paint. This piece avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the interplay of colour and form. The foreground beach area is suggested through simplified planes of colour, maintaining the balance between the solid mass of the rocks and the fluid nature of the sea. This print preserves the tactile quality of the original oil application, allowing the viewer to appreciate the artist's confident technique and his observation of the natural environment.
