Mariko: Famous Tea Shop - Utagawa Hiroshige

This woodblock print is the twentieth station in Utagawa Hiroshige's celebrated series, Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road. The composition captures a quiet moment at a roadside tea house in Mariko, a location known for its specialty dish, tororo-jiru (grated yam soup). Hiroshige depicts travellers resting under a thatched roof, while a solitary figure walks along the path in the background. The scene is defined by its simplicity and the clear, rhythmic arrangement of the architecture against the gentle slope of the hill.

Hiroshige utilised the ukiyo-e tradition to document the travel culture of Edo-period Japan. The print demonstrates his mastery of atmospheric perspective and colour application. The muted tones of the earth and the soft wash of the sky provide a sense of calm, typical of his approach to the Tokaido route.
