A refined Rococo portrait by Jean-Marc Nattier, depicting the Marquise d'Argence with a parrot and spaniel in a pastoral setting.
Jean-Marc Nattier was a leading portrait painter in the French court during the eighteenth century. This work depicts Marie Françoise de La Cropte de St. Abre, the Marquise d'Argence, in a style characteristic of the Rococo period. Nattier frequently employed allegorical elements in his portraits, often dressing his sitters as mythological figures or placing them within pastoral settings to convey a sense of grace and refinement.
The subject is shown with a parrot perched on her hand and a small spaniel resting beside her. These animals were common motifs in aristocratic portraiture, intended to suggest the sitter's gentle nature and domestic virtue. The Marquise wears a gown adorned with a garland of flowers, a detail that echoes the soft, light-filled atmosphere of the background. The composition balances the figure against a distant landscape, creating a sense of depth while maintaining the focus on the sitter's poise.
Nattier's technique involves a delicate application of paint, particularly in the rendering of the fabric and the soft features of the face. The palette is composed of muted tones, allowing the subtle pinks of the floral garland and the soft blue of the parrot to provide gentle contrast. This portrait reflects the taste of the French nobility for images that projected an idealised, serene existence. The work remains a representative example of the portraiture produced for the court of Louis XV, where the artist held a position of high regard for his ability to capture the likeness and status of his subjects with elegance.
