A detailed 1638 engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I, depicting a classical marble bust of Marcus Junius Brutus after a design by Peter Paul Rubens.
This engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I depicts the Roman statesman Marcus Junius Brutus, based on an antique marble bust. The work is a product of the collaboration between Vorsterman and Peter Paul Rubens, whose name appears on the plate as the designer. Vorsterman was one of the most skilled engravers in the circle of Rubens, known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of the master into the precise, linear language of the copperplate.
The composition focuses on the head and neck of the subject, presented in a three-quarter view. Vorsterman employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to model the facial features, capturing the texture of the stone and the play of light across the brow and cheekbones. The treatment of the hair, rendered with fluid, rhythmic lines, demonstrates the technical control characteristic of Vorsterman's mature period. The inscription at the base, 'M. BRVTVS IMP. Ex marmore antiquo', confirms the source of the image as a classical sculpture, reflecting the period's interest in antiquity and the study of Roman portraiture.
As a printmaker, Vorsterman was instrumental in disseminating the visual ideas of the Flemish Baroque. His work on this series of classical heads allowed him to experiment with tonal depth and sculptural volume. The background is kept relatively simple, which ensures that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the psychological intensity of the portrait. This print is a fine example of seventeenth-century reproductive engraving, where the goal was not merely to copy a source, but to interpret the form through the specific capabilities of the burin. The clarity of the lines and the balance of the composition make this a representative piece of the era's print culture.
