An eighteenth-century aquatint by Paul Sandby depicting the coastal ruins of Manorbier Castle in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
Paul Sandby, often referred to as the father of the English watercolour school, produced this aquatint of Manorbier Castle (historically spelled Manerbawr) as part of his extensive documentation of the British Isles. Sandby was a pioneer in the use of the aquatint process, a technique that allowed for the subtle tonal gradations seen in this print. The work captures the rugged coastal architecture of Pembrokeshire with precision, reflecting the eighteenth-century interest in topographical accuracy and the picturesque qualities of ancient ruins.
The composition features the castle perched upon a cliffside, overlooking the sea. Sandby includes figures in the foreground, providing a sense of scale and daily life against the backdrop of the medieval fortification. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of depth, while the fine lines of the etching define the masonry and the natural textures of the rocky terrain. This print is characteristic of Sandby's output during his travels through Wales, where he sought to record the architectural heritage of the region for a public increasingly interested in domestic tourism and antiquarian study.
As a founding member of the Royal Academy, Sandby influenced the development of British art through his technical innovations and his commitment to the depiction of the natural world. This print demonstrates his ability to balance the structural requirements of architectural drawing with the atmospheric effects of printmaking. The monochromatic palette emphasises the form and texture of the castle, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the man-made structure and the coastal environment. It remains a valuable record of the site as it appeared in the late eighteenth century, before subsequent restorations altered its profile.
