A rare woodblock print by Utamaro II, featuring a delicate scene of mandarin ducks beneath a cherry tree, serving as a programme for a joruri performance.
This woodblock print by Utamaro II functions as a banzuke, or programme, for a joruri performance. The upper portion features a delicate kacho-ga composition, depicting a pair of mandarin ducks resting near a stream beneath a blossoming cherry tree. The artist employs a soft palette, balancing the muted tones of the gnarled tree trunk with the subtle pinks of the petals and the naturalistic colours of the birds. The composition is open and airy, typical of the refined aesthetic found in ephemeral prints produced for theatrical events during the Edo period.
The lower section of the sheet contains dense columns of kanji text, which list the performers, musicians, and sponsors associated with the joruri production. Joruri is a form of traditional Japanese narrative music, often performed with puppet theatre. These programmes were distributed to audiences to provide context for the performance, serving as both a souvenir and a functional guide. The contrast between the pictorial upper half and the structured, typographic lower half demonstrates the integration of visual art and commercial information in Japanese print culture.
Utamaro II, a successor to the famous Kitagawa Utamaro, maintained the stylistic traditions of his predecessor while working within the specific demands of the publishing industry. The print exhibits the precise line quality and balanced composition expected of high-quality woodblock production. The paper shows signs of age, including horizontal creases from its original folded state, which is common for documents of this nature. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of fine art and the popular entertainment culture of nineteenth-century Japan, where the visual arts were frequently employed to promote and document theatrical life.
