Mandala of the Sun God Surya - Kitaharasa

A 14th-century Nepalese mandala depicting the sun god Surya, rendered in traditional mineral pigments on cotton.

This work, attributed to the artist Kitaharasa, represents a traditional Nepalese mandala dedicated to the solar deity Surya. The composition follows a strict geometric hierarchy, common in Himalayan religious painting, where the central figure occupies the primary position within a circular frame. Surya is depicted with characteristic iconography, seated upon a chariot drawn by seven horses, which symbolise the days of the week or the rays of the sun. The surrounding space is filled with smaller deities and attendants, arranged in concentric circles and rectangular registers that define the sacred space of the mandala.

The colour palette is dominated by deep ochre, cinnabar red, and earthy tones, typical of the mineral pigments used in 14th-century Nepalese painting. The figures are rendered with precise outlines, maintaining a balance between stylised religious iconography and individual characterisation. The outer borders contain rows of seated figures, likely representing a lineage of teachers or secondary deities, which frame the central solar manifestation. The bottom register depicts ritual activity, providing a narrative context for the devotional function of the piece.

Technically, the work demonstrates the mastery of distemper on cotton, a medium that allowed for the application of opaque, matte colours. The preservation of these pigments over centuries provides insight into the material culture of the Kathmandu Valley during this period. The arrangement of the figures reflects the cosmological understanding of the time, where the sun god acts as the centre of a structured universe.
