This Cubist portrait by Jacques Villon depicts a seated man using intersecting planes and geometric shapes. The muted colour palette of greens, reds, and purples adds depth to the abstracted figure.
Jacques Villon, born Gaston Émile Duchamp, was a French Cubist and abstract painter, also known for his printmaking. He was the brother of artists Marcel Duchamp and Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. Villon developed his own style of Cubism, distinct from that of Picasso and Braque, characterised by its use of geometric forms and a muted colour palette. He was a member of the Section d'Or group of artists. His work explores the fragmentation of form and space, a hallmark of Cubist art. 'Man Sitting' presents a figure rendered in a series of intersecting planes and geometric shapes. The colour scheme is restrained, featuring greens, reds, and purples that create a sense of depth and volume. The figure is abstracted to the point where only the suggestion of a seated man remains, inviting the viewer to engage with the artwork on a conceptual level. The composition is carefully balanced, with each plane contributing to the overall structure of the image.
