A delicate ink and light colour study by Zeng Yandong, depicting a figure riding a carp, a traditional motif symbolising perseverance and transformation.
This work is a leaf from a miniature album by the Qing Dynasty artist Zeng Yandong. It depicts a figure mounted upon a carp, a motif rooted in Chinese folklore and Taoist iconography. The carp is often associated with the legend of the dragon gate, where the fish transforms after successfully swimming upstream, symbolising perseverance and academic success. Here, the artist employs a light, gestural approach, using minimal ink strokes to define the form of both the rider and the aquatic creature.
The composition is sparse, typical of the literati tradition where the focus remains on the expressive quality of the brushwork rather than realistic representation. The figure possesses a whimsical, almost caricature-like quality, which is characteristic of Zeng Yandong's individualistic style. His work often deviates from the rigid academic standards of the period, favouring a more personal and spontaneous mode of expression. The inclusion of calligraphy on the left side of the page serves as an integral part of the visual balance, providing context and poetic commentary that complements the ink drawing.
Zeng Yandong was known for his eccentric approach to painting and his ability to capture character through simple, fluid lines. The use of muted colour washes, applied sparingly to the face and body of the figure, adds a subtle warmth to the monochrome ink. The paper shows signs of age, which contributes to the authentic character of this historical piece. This print captures the essence of the original album leaf, preserving the delicate balance between the calligraphic text and the illustrative figure. It offers a glimpse into the private, scholarly art practices of the late 18th and early 19th centuries in China, where small-scale albums were often shared among friends and fellow intellectuals.
